Purple Banana opened in Old Town in 2012 and quickly became a favorite family fixture. Now the business has settled into its new home on Court Street with decks and shaded balconies facing the beachfront.
The menu has expanded too. Now, in addition to the luscious frozen yogurt, the Purple Banana serves up home-made burgers, chili-dogs, nachos and fries.
Purple Banana is an original, not a franchise, where customers have a huge and constantly changing menu of delicious nonfat and low fat choices.
The five best sellers that stay on the menu board are chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, cake batter and cheese cake. “I don’t feel comfortable not having one of those,” Robin said.
As for toppings, Purple Banana offers 48. “They stay pretty consistent,” Robin said. “I’ll add toppings here and there if they’re not moving very quickly.”
Her favorite? Cake Batter. “I eat it every day.”
The Bay St. Louis store is popular with tourists who come to Old Town, Robin said, “But the people we serve are from 2-year-olds all the way up. Every age.”
It’s all self serve and customers pay by the ounce. “You do just what you want to it,” she said. Customers who are able to guess the weight of their purchase get it free. While it's not easy to do, it's always fun for the family - and most days, several guests walk away winners.
The store is open daily from noon to 9 p.m. and has inside and outside seating.
“We pride ourselves in having the shop incredibly clean, everything is very consistent and the staff is genuinely friendly and helpful,” she said. “We want it to be a great experience when you come to our stores.”
