Honoring History, Embracing Community, Celebrating with Spirit!
The Mystic Krewe of the Seahorse (MKOTSH) is a vibrant nonprofit organization based in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, dedicated to celebrating local history, fostering community spirit, and supporting charitable causes through monthly meetings and events throughout the year. The group raised over $21,000 in 2024 for Hancock County charities.
Established in 2014 by brothers Donald and Rory Rafferty, along with friends and family, the Krewe draws its name from the U.S.S. Seahorse, a naval schooner that engaged British forces during the Battle of Bay St. Louis on December 14, 1814. This engagement, part of the War of 1812, played a crucial role in delaying British advancement, contributing to General Andrew Jackson’s victory at the Battle of New Orleans.
MKOTSH is renowned for organizing several annual events that blend historical homage with community celebration:
- Lundi Gras Golf Cart Parade: Held on the Monday before Mardi Gras, this unique parade features elaborately decorated golf carts and participants in pirate-themed attire, attracting thousands of spectators to the streets of Bay St. Louis.
- Pirate Day in the Bay: A weekend-long festival celebrating the city’s pirate lore, featuring live music, a pub crawl, scavenger hunts, and a golf cart parade, drawing visitors from across the region.
- Seahorse Open Golf Scramble: A community golf tournament that combines sport with philanthropy, supporting local causes.
Beyond festivities, MKOTSH is committed to philanthropy:
- Scholarships: Annually awards $1,000 scholarships and laptops to graduating seniors in Hancock County.
- Donations: Has contributed over $21,000 to local nonprofits, supporting various community initiatives.
Each year, MKOTSH appoints a Captain Longbeard and Lady Claiborne to preside over events, embodying the spirit of the Krewe. Membership is open to residents of Hancock and neighboring counties, fostering inclusivity and community engagement.
